Mandarin Immersion
(18 months - 6 years)

Mandarin Immersion

for both Toddler and Primary Program

One of the objectives at Garfield Montessori School is to provide a Mandarin immersion environment so that children can either maintain the level of fluency of their mother language or learn a second language in a fun and efficient way. Learning a second language at an early age offers numerous benefits to children, including improved cognitive skills, enhanced memory, greater cultural understanding, and increased confidence, ultimately leading to better academic and career prospects.

Mandarin immersion for the toddler program will focus on listening and speaking ability in Mandarin in addition to English. The toddler classroom is staffed with a Montessori-trained teacher and an assistant teacher who has training in early childhood education. One teacher will speak only in Mandarin, and one will speak in English. The Mandarin Immersion for Toddler program aims to help children understand and communicate in Mandarin AND English.

Mandarin immersion will be more in-depth in the primary program, focusing on listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in Mandarin in addition to English. The primary classroom is staffed with two Montessori-trained teachers, one English-speaking and one Mandarin-speaking. The concepts and materials will be taught in both Mandarin and English. The goal of the Mandarin immersion for the primary program is for children to both understand and communicate in Mandarin AND English fluently, as well as to read and write in Chinese AND English.
