Primary Program
3 - 6 years
The primary program at Garfield Montessori School uses a Montessori curriculum. The core curriculum includes Montessori activities focused on language (speaking, reading, and writing), mathematics, sensory, social, practical life, culture, science, geography, biology, and history. After-school enrichment classes will be provided to the primary program, such as fine art, music/piano, sports, and dance.
Examples of Montessori concepts/activities for preschool age:
Language – reading and writing based on phonetics and is enriched with a broad range of dynamic, interactive, and fun activities. The program guides the child toward fluent reading, from oral language development to associating sounds and symbols and experiencing the function of grammar. Some of the topics and activities included are:
• Oral language activities which are focused on vocabulary enrichment, language training, visual discrimination, sound games, and classification
• Natural development of writing before reading, fostering the development of fine motor skills, and facilitating sound consciousness
• Presenting Montessori language materials and activities, including the Sound Pouches and Games, Sandpaper Letters, and Movable Alphabet
• Implementing a sequential phonetic reading program
• Materials and activities that introduce and reinforce the parts of speech, including nouns, articles, adjectives, conjunctions, prepositions, verbs, and adverbs
Mathematics – children will explore numbers 1–10, learn about quantities and symbols, and how to associate the two. Through incremental learning, the children systematically build on this foundation to learn about the decimal system, numbers to 100, and solving four-digit addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division equations.
Sensory – the iconic and beautiful sensorial materials used in the classroom isolate and provide concrete examples of abstract concepts perceived through the senses. The sensorial activities help children understand their world through the information received from the environment and lay the groundwork for intellectual life by refining the visual, tactile, auditory, and olfactory senses and promoting the development of cognitive skills.
Practical Life – a wide range of practical, real-life activities are offered that assist the child in developing a sense of order, concentration, personal pride, independence, respect for others, fine motor skills, grace and courtesy, confidence, and self-esteem. Practical life activities are key in guiding children toward independence and being able to proudly say, “I can do it myself!” The activities mainly include body movement, care of self, care of the environment, grace and courtesy
Geography – children will explore physical and cultural geography with Montessori Globes, Land and Water Forms, Puzzles Maps, and Flags of the World
History – children will explore the passage of time and appreciate personal history by examining birthdays, personal timelines, family trees, and the changing seasons
Biology – children will explore living and non-living things, differences between plants and animals, caring for classroom animals
Science – Children will have exciting, hands-on experiments that provide active participation with trial and error, exploring natural laws such as magnetism, buoyancy, evaporation, chemical reactions, and light and color
Mandarin immersion will be more in-depth in the primary program, focusing on listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in Mandarin in addition to English. The primary classroom is staffed with two Montessori-trained teachers, one English-speaking and one Mandarin-speaking. The concepts and materials will be taught in both Mandarin and English. The goal of the Mandarin immersion for the primary program is for children to both understand and communicate in Mandarin AND English fluently, as well as to read and write in Chinese AND English.
